  3. ABOUT ACANTHUS (BEAR'S BREECHES):
  4. There are about 20 species of Acanthus.  They are perennial herbs
  5. and subshrubs, mostly of Mediterranean origin.  Typical flowers are
  6. white or purplish with large spike-tipped bracts.  Rich, well drained
  7. soils are best.  Due to their deep, thick roots some species can be
  8. difficult to move once established.
  9.  
  10. Root cuttings are one means of propagation, and severed roots left
  11. in the ground may give rise to new plants.
  12.  
  13. The Acanthus plant leant it's form to the ancient Greek Corinthian
  14. column capitals.
  15.  
  16. We carry three types of Acanthus: their leaves are various shades
  17. of purple, and appear spiny.

  32. Very hardy variety with narrow leaves with large spaces between the
  33. lobes.  Light purple/pink flower spikes in the summer.

  36. Fine narrow leaves are almost like thistles with spines at the leaf
  37. tips.  Flowers are white with some purple or pink, with darker
  38. purple bracts.

  41. Summer flowers are lilac and tinged with white in the late summer.
  42. Large toothed leaves are not spiny.

  44. ABOUT ARCHILLEA (YARROW):
  45. Archillea, commonly called Yarrow, is a very easy to grow perennial.
  46. The archilleas can be very small or quite tall.  The dwarf archilleas
  47. are wonderful for rock gardens.  The tall varieties are known for
  48. their rich masses of flowers that appear from spring to mid-summer.
  49.  
  50. The Yarrow flowers lend themselves to drying and preserving.  They
  51. should be removed when they fade so the blooming period will be
  52. prolonged.

  54. Archillea are resistant to drought, and like full sun light.  They
  55. will tolerate poor soil, but do better when the soil is moist.  They
  56. should be divided about every four years to prevent crowding.

  102. ABOUT DELPHINIUM (LARKSPUR):
  103. Delphiniums are among the most popular flowers because of their
  104. amazing flowers.  Their tall spikes of flowers are shades of blue,
  105. white, reddish, or yellow.  Often the flowers have a contrasting
  106. color at the center, called a "bee."  They make excellent dried
  107. flowers.  The leaves are about 4" across, mainly at the bottom of
  108. the plant.
  109.  
  110. Delphiniums are not hard to grow, although you will have to spend
  111. some effort.
  112.  
  113. They prefer sun and well fertilized moist soil.  If you cut back the
  114. stalks after the first flower they will often flower again.
  115.  
  116. They like cool areas the best.
